Israel Thwarting Suicide Bomb Attempts in Recent Months - 4 Dec 2003

...There has been an uneasy calm over Israel the past couple of months as terrorist bombings seem to have ceased. Josh Block, spokesman for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, has an explanation for the lull in the bombings. "We've been very lucky because the Israelis have been quite successful in thwarting dozens of suicide bombings a week, meaning they catch the suicide bomber on the way to carry out the bombing," Block says. And how are the Israelis accomplishing this? According to Block, it is sometimes the result of checkpoints and inspections of cars, or perhaps following up on intelligence tips. "And in some cases, it's just question of random checking that turns up these suicide bombers and stops these attacks before they happen," he says. Block says Israeli officials also claim the new anti-terrorism fence being erected should get plenty of credit for the calm being experienced right now in Israel.
