What if Gore had Won? - 3 Dec 2003

...In light of the ongoing criticism of President Bush foreign policy, an author and magazine editor wants to remind Americans of what shape the country might be in right now if Al Gore had won the 2000 election. Rich Lowry, editor of National Review, believes former President Bill Clinton is obsessed with trying to rewrite the legacy of his failed presidency. As the 2004 presidential sweepstakes heat up, the former Chief Executive has been critical of Bush's handling of the war on terror. But Lowry says if Clinton or Al Gore were in the Oval Office, the pressure would be on Israel. "Clinton basically bought [into] the Arab view that nothing was wrong with the Middle East that can't be cured by American pressure on Israel -- and that's what we did all through the 1990s," the journalist says. "It got us nothing; these people still came here to our country to murder us." And Lowry says it would be a nightmare if Janet Reno was still Attorney General. "In the 1990s, she made it much harder for the FBI to surveil terrorists, and she resisted cracking down on terrorists' financing," he says. "It was as if the ACLU was running the Justice Department -- and imagine what it would be like if the ACLU was running the Justice Department right now. It would be a nightmare." Lowry recently published Legacy: Paying the Price for the Clinton Years. |
