Public Must Speak at Ballot Box to End Filibusters - 3 Dec 2003

...Of all the methods being talked about for ending Democrats' Senate filibuster of conservative, pro-life nominations, an Alabama senator says his is the only one that will work. Republican Jeff Sessions suggests the solution to the nominee problem is simple. "Ultimately this matter will be decided by the American people," the senator says. "They're going to have to speak." And how are they to do that? Sessions says the only thing the Democratic leadership fears at this point is the ballot box. "If they start losing senators -- and I hope they will over this very issue -- I think we could see some votes change," he says. Among the other proposals for ending the blockade of nominees are recess appointments while Congress is away, and rules changes governing filibusters. Neither of those methods are expected to happen.
