National Education Association Confirms IRS Investigation - 1 Dec 2003

...The National Education Association has confirmed that it is now the subject of an IRS investigation. The NEA is one of the most powerful unions in America, representing thousands of school teachers. At issue is a charge that the union used millions of dollars in membership dues for unreported political activities. The accusation of wrongdoing comes from the Virginia-based Landmark Legal Foundation. In complaints filed with the Internal Revenue Service, the Foundation claims that the NEA illegally spend millions of dollars over the past decade from its members tax-exempt dues to fight political battles for the Democratic Party and promote the election of Democrats. The president of Landmark, Mark Levin, tells The Washington Times that it appears the NEA may finally be called to account for the failure to tell the government and its members how much union money is being spent on political causes.
