Black Friday Shopping Boycott - 21 Nov 2003
|
...A Christian housewife in Delaware wants other concerned believers to refrain from shopping on the busiest retail day of the year in a symbolic protest against companies that have no concern for family values. Barbara Goodchild of Townsend, Delaware, says God is being removed from society, so concerned Christians need to show corporate America that they are not happy. The busiest shopping day of the year for retailers is the day after Thanksgiving -- a day Goodchild calls "Black Friday." On that day, she says Christians should keep their money at home. She points out that the advertisers and their sponsors ignore God in their pursuit of consumer dollars, and sometimes even present their products in ways that oppose godly values. But she says they apparently have no problem accepting the name of God when it is printed on American money. Goodchild says the purpose of the Black Friday shopping boycott is basically for believers "to take a silent stand, and say, 'You're removing God from society, but He still is on our money ... so just this one day we're going to not go out and shop, just to make a statement that we want God brought back." Although the day after Thanksgiving is only one day, Goodchild says it is the most important day of the year for retailers. And she should know, since she spent 30 years in retail herself. But now the housewife, mother of two, and proud grandmother wants others who value faith and family to show corporate America what is most important. |
