Hot Social Issues Boil Down to Differing World Views - 20 Nov 2003

...An expert on the family says many of the social issues that are being debated in today's American culture are the result of contrasting worldviews. Whether it is the daycare debate, battles over feminism, or efforts to redefine marriage and the family, Dr. Allan Carlson of the Family Research Council says it all boils down to how people view the world. He says the two possibilities are diametrically opposed: on one side is a family-centered worldview that "accepts the innate roles of men as fathers and women as mothers and that tries to build a social, economic, and political order that will best nurture children." And on the other side, the researcher says, there is "a quest for an abstract, androgynous equality, bonded to socialism -- a vision that willingly uses political power to crush the natural differences of men and women." Carlson implies that as long as these conflicting worldviews exist, people will continue to fight over which view controls the social issues of the day. |
