Americans Should Not be Concerned with Anti-Bush Comments from the British - 19 Nov 2003

...A former advisor to Lady Margaret Thatcher feels Americans should not be too concerned about the anti-Bush comments made by the mayor of London, or by the anti-American protests surrounding the U.S. president's visit to the British capital. A Guardian newspaper poll finds that more of the British people approve of Bush's visit than do not. Nile Gardiner is the visiting fellow for Anglo-American Security Policy at the Heritage Foundation. He says Bush's warm personality will play well in the United Kingdom, and says, "I think this is an opportunity for President Bush to get his message across to the British public and also the European public." The one-time advisor to former Prime Minister Thatcher is dismissing the comment by Mayor Ken Livingstone, who called George W. Bush "the greatest threat to life on Earth." Gardiner says the mayor of London, who "is known locally as Red Ken because of his left-wing affiliations, is such an extremist that even his own Labour Party threw him out, so I wouldn't really take the comments of Ken Livingstone too seriously." Gardiner calls it "an absolute disgrace" that Livingstone is able to hold a reception for anti-war protestors at the British taxpayers' expense. |
