Steven Curtis Chapman Thanks God at Award Show Despite Jimmy Kimmel Protest - 17 Nov 2003

...Christian singer Steven Curtis Chapman is offering no apologies for publicly thanking God during a recent music award program, despite instructions from the emcee not to do so. At a recent American Music Awards ceremony broadcast live from Los Angeles, Chapman was named this year's favorite contemporary inspirational artist. The American Music Awards is a Dick Clark Production, hosted this year by comedian Jimmy Kimmel, who said at the outset that he had a rule against winners thanking God. Amid laughter, Kimmel quipped, "God does not watch television, and if he did he would not be watching this show." But when Chapman received his award, he decided not to hold back when he listed those he wanted to thank, and summed up his acceptance speech with "Finally, Jimmy, I'm sorry, but thanks be to God for His indescribable gift." There is no word on whether Kimmel had any criticism for Chapman's violation of his rule, but it appears that it certainly did not upset the crowd.
