...Outside insurgents continue to infiltrate Iraq in an effort to carry out their own jihad against American troops. Many military experts believe large numbers of these Muslim terrorists are coming from Syria. Retired Col. Bob Maginnis does not think Syria will lift a hand to help prevent the insurgents from launching their jihads from its soil. The Syrians, he believes, have a vested interest in seeing that instability remains in Iraq. "What they don't want," he says, "is a stable democratic Iraq that will tend to seed dissent within their own country." Maginnis says Syria's ruling body is a Ba'athist regime, like that of Saddam Hussein, that uses the same brutal methods to rule its people. He says he does not see much hope for change -- or for help. |
