Law & Order: SVU Misportrays Homosexual Counseling on Leaving the Lifestyle - 13 Nov 2003

...A prominent pro-family group says instead of entertaining its television audience, an NBC drama went out of its way this week to deliver "misinformed drivel" about homosexuality. Tuesday's episode of Law & Order: SVU featured the character of a therapist who was counseling men and women about leaving the homosexual lifestyle. Other actors in the program referred to that character as "Dr. Homophobe" -- and according to Focus on the Family, the show's writers took every opportunity to discredit the effectiveness of such counseling. By the end of the episode, the writers even had the therapist murdering his homosexual son's lover. Mike Haley, an ex-homosexual who manages the gender issues issues department for FOTF, says he was "stunned" at the show's misrepresentation and "activist agenda" in trying to convince the American public that sexual orientation cannot be changed. Haley himself is testimony that that is a lie. "The truth is that, for those struggling with unwanted homosexuality, there is a way out," Haley says, "and thousands of men and women who have voluntarily taken that journey are surely expressing outrage at this attempted invalidation of their lives and experiences." The Focus on the Family staffer says the mainstream continues to convey the lie that it is impossible for a person to change his or her sexual orientation. "Such misinformed drivel is simply irresponsible and potentially harmful to those who are looking for a way out."
