Alaska Republican Lisa Murkowski Stands Up For Stay At Home Parents - 12 Nov 2003

...A U.S. senator is hoping to offer some help for families who still believe in stay-at-home moms. Alaska Republican Lisa Murkowski says it is unfortunate that government is often a huge obstacle to that goal. "When one parent leaves the workforce to stay home and raise a child, he or she is not allowed to deduct expenses [through the child/dependent tax credits] that the family would normally pay for babysitting or daycare," the senator says. "So in effect, what we have done is create a stay-at-home tax penalty for those parents who are making that choice." Murkowski has introduced a bill that would allow stay-at-home parents to take some expenses as deductions. She says it is the only way to help make up for the loss of an entire income. |
